Hemoglobin A1c

HBA-1C Tests in BUSHRA CLINIC

Average glucose, often calculated using the Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test, provides an estimation of your average blood sugar levels over a period of time, typically the past two to three months. The A1c result can be translated into an estimated average glucose (eAG) value, which is expressed in the same units as daily blood glucose readings (mg/dL).

 About Average Glucose:

  1. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) Conversion:

    • A1c levels are reported as a percentage. For example, an A1c of 7% corresponds to an average glucose level of about 154 mg/dL.

    • The formula to convert A1c to average glucose is: eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1c (%) – 46.7.

  2. Importance in Diabetes Management:

    • Monitoring Long-term Control: Average glucose levels provide insight into how well diabetes is being managed over time, beyond daily fluctuations in glucose levels.

    • Reducing Complications: Keeping average glucose within target ranges helps reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, neuropathy, and retinopathy.

  3. Interpreting Average Glucose:

    • An eAG of 126 mg/dL or higher corresponds to an A1c of 6.5% or higher, indicating diabetes.

    • An eAG between 100-125 mg/dL corresponds to an A1c between 5.7-6.4%, indicating prediabetes.

    • An eAG below 100 mg/dL generally corresponds to an A1c below 5.7%, indicating normal glucose levels.

  4. Factors Influencing Average Glucose:

    • Diet and Exercise: Regular physical activity and a balanced diet can help maintain healthy blood glucose levels.

    • Medications: Insulin and other diabetes medications play a crucial role in controlling blood sugar.

    • Stress and Illness: Both can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate, impacting the average glucose.

    • Monitoring: Regular testing and adjustments based on trends can help manage and stabilize blood sugar levels effectively.

Understanding your average glucose levels is essential for effective diabetes management and long-term health. It provides a more comprehensive view of blood sugar control than daily readings alone.
